That is until she hears the vet coming. The dreaded Footsteps from the Bad Door. Then she all, "I'll be under the bench. Let me know when it's time to go."
So, my lovely little dog has a new hobby.
She pees in her sleep.
Yes, I just said that. Five year-old dog. Wetting the bed. Her bed is MY bed. Very uncool. And I'm not talking about actually getting up and peeing. I'm talking about literally peeing where she is laying. WTF? She has done it twice in the last 2 weeks. Vet suspects spay incontinence. Which, I hear, I pretty successfully treated with meds. But, before we start meds, we have to rule out infection. They couldn't get anything out of her yesterday "manually."
I'm not sure what that means, but I picture elbows being involved.
We were also unsuccessful with the capture method. Shouldn't vets have that fancy cup on a stick thing? Mine doesn't. Kate will not stay put when you come at her with a bowl. She started to squat like 500 times and just stands and moves away when you come at her. Looking very offended, I might add. Hovering human with water dish not a part of her Urination SOP.
So, today she is being tortured with No Potty, until I can run her over there again tonight for Try #3. Have I mentioned that I am on the west side of SJ and my vet is on the east? The pains of rush hour traffic? Rush hour traffic during worst storm in 47 years?
I do love my dogs, really.
And if any of you hard-core clicker trainers can figure out how to train a dog to do Kegal exercises I'll totally fax you twenty bucks.
Poor Kate! Good luck to you both. (Still laughing at the Kegel bet.)
ReplyDeleteYou joke about the exercises but one of our adopters says that by "wiping" her german shepherd with a babywipe, it caused the dog to contract her muscles and did result on her being weaned off incontinence meds. Just sayin'. I don't remember her routine exactly but maybe I can point her in this direction to tell you herself.
ReplyDeleteThat said, we see a lot of dogs with incontinence at the vet where I work and the meds do seem to do the trick.
Ugh, I know exactly where you are. 2 years ago, Molly became spay incontinent. See informative article: http://www.dogaware.com/wdjincontinence.html
ReplyDeleteAfter trying a bunch of remedies (non-RX), we found that a completely grain free diet and a 1x a day herbal pill (Genesis Resources Canine Incontinence) keeps my girl leak free. Check out the article for some great info!
Sorry about the piddle bed. I have had to collect "samples" for the past 10 years every month to check for bladder issues for our 11 year old Bichon Frise. I realize she is a smaller dog but I use a 1/2 cup size measuring cup with a long handle. I put her on a short leash and just go for a normal walk. I discreetly collect from behind her when she sqats and she is none the wiser. Good luck and I hope beautiful Kate gets better soon. In the meantime you might try Pampers with a hole cut out for her tail.
ReplyDeleteI have an almost 10 year old who has been on incontinence meds since she was about 6 years old. She is really good about taking her pills. But if I forget one of her DES pills she will have another accident. We actually have a difficult case in her as she has to take two different medications to control her incontinence.
ReplyDeleteGood luck.
My dog did the same thing 6 years ago when she was one. After a lot of testing and money she was diagnosed with Leptospriosis. They don't give the vaccine here unless you ask for it and it wasn't something I was aware of at the time. It all started when she would wet the bed at night. I would wake up and we would both be laying in her urine. Her urine was clear though and didn't have much of a smell. If you want to here the rest of the story/info you can send me an email. If you don't get that specific vaccination for her though, you might ask your vet about it.
ReplyDeleteI've used a well-thrown frisbee (obviously not your favorite one) to collect urine from my dogs.
ReplyDeleteYou gotta toss it *just* right, though.
I would pee on myself if a stranger chased me with a bowl.
ReplyDeleteUt oh...hope you don't have to get Huggies!
ReplyDeleteBenny & Lily
The last 2 years of my boxers life she was stone deaf and became incontinent while sleeping. When she was awake, she still told me she had to go out. Pull-ups were my saviour! Just a little hole for her tail. It was too funny how excited I was when she would wake up dry...just like when my daughter was potty training. Good luck to you!
ReplyDeleteWhat does chica Bella think of all these strange attempts at catching pee?
Ahh, good luck! Our old Dalmatian had incontinence issues, and had to have pee collected a few times... my mom had to follow her around with a Tupperware container. Completely not fun.
ReplyDeleteTwo words. Soup Ladle.
ReplyDeleteCan't get close enough? Soup ladle, duct tape and a stick. Good luck!
Cute pictures!!
ReplyDeleteLots of Licks--
Oak and Swish
Oh dear...good luck to you both...i suggest you buy pampers for the meantime :p
ReplyDeleteUck! I had the same problem with my mastiff. She kept getting infections and had to have surgery for a (gasp) inverted vulva. Eeeesh! Did stop her from getting infections and leaking on the bed, though. Gave her a nice smiley face in her most private area too.
ReplyDeleteMango Momma
P.S. Oh yeah, we also had to put her on a nasty diet for a while of kibbles which apparently tasted so bad even the crows wouldn't eat what I tossed out.
My female BC started having urinary incontinence issues when she was about a year and a half old. (adopted her at approx. 8 months, so I don't know her history before then)
ReplyDeleteShe would be sleeping and then wake up (quite embarrassed and mortified, I might add) to find a spot of pee underneath her. We checked for infection and then my vet diagnosed her with the "spay urinary incontinence" She put her on estrogen tablets which we reduced the amount given over time. Now at three and a half she gets a half tablet about every 2 months, or whenever she has an issue. Sorry about the bed thing tho, that stinks! Good Luck!
